Colin McDonald, who grew up in Bonnybridge but now lives in Glasgow, took on a 10-day epic cycle challenge from Land’s End to John O Groats to fundraise for Strathcarron Hospice in memory of his mum Norma.

Colin completed 1000 miles (1600km) - averaging out 96 miles (155km) per day, with the shortest day being 92 miles and the longest 114miles - with a total elevation of 56,000 feet (17000m ascent).

43-year-old Colin who works at Cumbernauld engineering company Thomson Pettie, said: “Mum always said I was “bloody daft” when setting out on my many cycling challenges - so I can only imagine what she would think of this one! I cycle with friends socially and commute by bike to and from work, so thought it would be a good challenge to take on for Strathcarron.

“It was such an amazing experience and a highlight was having my photos taken at both iconic landmarks.”

Colin added: “The care my mum received at the hospice was everything to us - from her first admission, to her taking her last breath.

“I wanted to be able to honour Mum and Strathcarron, where she spent her final days, whilst taking on this challenge.

“Losing Mum last year was very tough and without the help from the amazing team at Strathcarron it would have been even harder for our family to deal with.

“To think the facility relies solely on charity fundraising is crazy, as the work the staff do is truly that of saints or soldiers you might say.

“My family and I can never truly thank all the staff for everything they did for Mum and ourselves during her stay there, but we would love to be able to donate towards their continued care for others who need it.”

Mel Duffy, Community Fundraiser with Strathcarron Hospice said: “We would like to thank Colin for taking on this incredible physical challenge for the hospice in memory of his mum Norma. Colin set out to raise £500 and has completely smashed that by raising an amazing £4050 plus Gift Aid.

“Strathcarron Hospice provides specialist palliative care to patients across Forth Valley, Cumbernauld & Kilsyth in the Hospice and in patients' own homes. We need to raise £19,452 every day to provide these vital services.

“With the support of our community and amazing individuals like Colin, we can help our patients to live well right up until the end of their life and make every moment count.”
