Three Patient Rooms Refurbished Thanks to Significant Grant from the Wolfson Foundation Three Patient Rooms Transformed Thanks to Significant Grant from the Wolfson Foundation We are delighted to have completed the refurbishment of three inpatient bedrooms, made possible by a generous grant from the independent grant making charity, the Wolfson Foundation. The transformation marks an important milestone in the Hospice’s three-year plan to modernise all 24 bedrooms and ensure patients and families receive the very best comfort, privacy and clinical care. Last year, the 24-bed inpatient unit welcomed 325 person admissions and more than 20,000 visits including family members and friends. Before and after shots: Transformation that “makes an immediate difference” In 2023, the Hospice refurbished two rooms to test new design ideas and gather feedback from patients, families and clinical staff. The impact was described as “transformational”- brighter, calmer, more homely spaces that better support dignity, rest and precious time together. Building on this success, the additional grant from the Wolfson Foundation has enabled Strathcarron to upgrade three further rooms. These enhancements include: Improved infection-control design: sinks moved to the entrance for handwashing without disturbing patients Greater privacy and dignity: a professional clinical area at the door, reducing interruptions Reconfigured layout: improved line of sight for staff and optimal garden views for patients Modern décor and comfort upgrades: softer lighting, nature-inspired colours, new flooring, upgraded shower rooms, and improved dementia-informed design Better space for loved ones: private resting alcoves, flexible seating, and mini-fridges for snacks and refreshments. “These rooms are at the heart of family life during the most difficult days.” Marjory Mackay, Director of Nursing, Strathcarron Hospice“We cannot thank the Wolfson Foundation enough for their generosity. These rooms are far more than clinical spaces, they are where families gather, share memories, and make every moment count. The improvements make an immediate and profound difference for the people we care for.” Paul Ramsbottom, Chief Executive of the Wolfson Foundation, commented: “We are delighted to have helped Strathcarron Hospice modernise their inpatient bedrooms, addressing clinical needs while at the same time enhancing comfort, relaxation, dignity and safety for patients and their families.” Meeting rising demand for world-class care Demand for specialist palliative care is increasing sharply. The local population of people aged 75+ is projected to grow by 47% by 2035, and deaths in the area are expected to rise by 18%. Strathcarron has seen a 32% increase in referrals in the last five years and routinely operates with a waiting list for admission. Upgrading rooms is essential to maintaining the highest standards of clinical practice, infection control, comfort and family support.Thank you. Manage Cookie Preferences
